Tippani

The roots of Tippani in Gujarat can be traced to the Chorwad region of Saurashtra. It originated from an old practice of beating lime in to the foundation of a house with a tippani, a long stick fitted at one end with square wooden or iron block.

Women invented the dance to enjoy the otherwise tedious and tiring process. They stand in two lines facing one another and beat the tippani in rhythm while dancing and singing. It is mostly performed during festivals and weddings.
